BODY ON COBDEN BEACH
IDENTIFICATION DIFFICULT. A human left leg, intact from the hip down, was found by Mr T. McIntyre yesterday morning, on the inner beach near the north breakwater, at Cobden. This morning, when patrolling the beach, Constables Kearney and Hill came across the body of a ;man minus the left leg. The remains were removed to the morgue. This afternoon several men were called in. for identification purposes. This was a difficult matter, as the face, above the mouth was unrecognisable, It is believed, however, by three men who were well acquainted with a man named Thomas Campbell, a former bricklayer, and recently a worker on the unemployment scheme in Greymouth, that the body is that of Campbell. Campbell has been missing for about two weeks. The body is that of a man past middle age, of slight build, and about five feet eight inches in height. The grey hair, irregular bottom teeth, and general build of the body, suggest to those persons who were acquainted with Campbell, that it is the body of the latter. From inquiries made to-day, it appears that Campbell, in company with another unemployed man, went aboard the Kaimiro during the afternoon of last Saturday week, and was there given a meal. Campbell’s friend left him on the boat, and that was the last that was seen of Campbell.
