Mr and Mrs P. H. Crough returned to Kokatahi on Saturday. Mr Samuel Ritchie has been appointed a Conciliation Commissioner for a further term of six months. — A London cablegram stated that Dame Clara Butt had sailed for Australia. She is 60 years of age. Mr John Rentoul has resigned his appointment as q._ producers’ representative on the New Zealand Honey Control Board. The late K. S. Rangitsinhji, Nawab of the Indian State of Nawanagar, and famous as a cricketer, died intestate. He left an estate in England

valued at £185,958. Guests at Revington’s include:-— Mr and Mrs W. Archibald (Christchurch), Messrs A. C. Sieveright (Dunedin), T. J. Hennessy (Wellington), J. S. Lee (Nelson). The death has occurred of Judge Rawson, of the Native Land Court. Judge Rawson was appointed in. 1906 and previously had much experience as a solicitor in the North Island. Press Assn. The death is announced from Christchurch of Rev. Frank Rule, 70, for 22 years Superintendent of the Presbyterian Social Service Association. He was a minister for 37 years, and retired in 1930. He was born in Scotland. His first charges were Ormond, Mount Eden, and Patea.— Press Assn. The engagement is announced of Oliver, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Kay, of “Ngahuru,” North-East Valley, Dunedin, and Alfred James, only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Howorth, of Roslyn, Dunedin. Miss Kay is well knowm in golfing circles in all parts of New Zealand. She won the Dominion championship at Heretaunga a few years ago. The death occurred on Saturday of Mr D. E. Theomin, one of the best ' known citizens of Dunedin, at the age of 81 years. He was the founder of the Dresden Piano Coy, and also with Mr G. P. Farquhar, he founded the tannery firm of Glendermid Ltd. He was a prominent member of the Jewish community, and was keenly interested in art, as well as a number of philanthropic organisations. Press Assn.

News has been received at Auckland of the death of Mr E. W. Gurr, at the naval hospital, Pago Pago, on July 1. Mr Gurr was educated at Invercargill and went to Samoa in 1886. He was Chief Judge for American Samoa from 1900 to 1908. Later he returned to Western Samoa from which, with Messrs O. F. Nelson and Mr A. G. Smyth, he was deported in 1928. Mr Gurr spent his exile in New Zealand. He /left for Apia last May, but owing to ill-health entered ; the hospital at Pago Pago.—Press Assn. The death occurred at Colombo, on Saturday morning, of Professor John Wilkie Hinton, Professor of Physics at the University of Ceylon. He was educated at Southland Boys’ High School. He graduated B.Sc., at Otago in 1915, and M.Sc., in 1916 with firstclass honours in physics. He was twice nominated for the Rhodes Scholarship. He served with the Rifle Brigade in the War. From 1920 to 1925 he was lecturer in physics at Otago, and from 1925 to 1926 he advanced his studies at Cambridge. At the end of 1926 he was appointed Professor of Physics at the University of Ceylon. He died suddenly of pneumonia and. pleurisy.—Press Assn. Mr. E. P. O’Donnell, who has retired on superannuation from the Locomotive Branch of the Railway Department, at Greymouth, was, tendered a farewell social by fellow employees of the Department, at the Old Boys’ rooms, on Saturday evening, There was a large attendance, and Mr. C. Dewar presided. The presentation of a leather coat and gloves was made by Mr. J. Cornish, whose eulogistic reference to Mr. O’Donnell, was endorsed by other speakers. During the evening a lengthy toast list was honoured, and vocal items were contributed by Messrs. L. Lintfbom, J. Bourke, F. Warren, N. Rothwell, C. O’Connor, H. Faulkner, J. Crooks, H. HiH, T. Gilmour and Captain Angus.
