REEFTON NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] REEFTON, July 17. The 32nd annual meeting of the Inangahua Silver Band was held yesterday morning. There was a good attendance. Mr J. B. Auld, President, occupied the chair. The annual report and balance sheet were presented, and the latter showed that the band was in a satisfactory condition financially, showing a slight improvement on the previous year’s working. During the year the band had added to the band room a porch, which was a decided asset to the room, and by Conducting a series of old-time dances, this had been paid for, and showed a credit balance in the building fund. Several members congratulated the Band on its sound position. The Chairman referred to the service rendered the band by its older* playing members, and trusted that junior players would follow in the older players- footsteps. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr E. Nicholsen; President, Mr J. B. Auld; Bandmaster, Mr W. Baird; Deputy Bandmaster, Mr Chas. Potter; Treasurer, Mr A. G. Reed; Secretary, Mr S. C. Robinson; Conductor, Mr A. E. Elliston; Band Sergeant, Mr W. Sara, jnr.; Band Corporal, Mr J. Robinson; Lance Corporals: Messrs G. Day, Jas Sara and W. Honey were nominated, and the two latter were elected; Drum Major, Mr T. Baird; Librarians, Lance Corporals; Vice-Presidents: Messrs M. J. O’Malley, John O’Regan, C. J. Lawn, Thos. Allen, W. J. Duff, Dr. J. L. Wicken, W. Parsonage, Mrs Stallard. The Conductor, Mr A. E. Elliston reviewed the musical work of the band for the year, and stated that the band had shown considerable improvement. Playing strength had kept up, and the Band had done better this year. A vote of appreciation to the retiring librarian, Mr W. Day for his work during the year was passed.

Mr J. B. Auld thank the Band for their playing at the hospital during the year, the Hospital staff and patients' deeply appreciated the Band’s work. Word has been received that Mr W. Hughes of Walsh Street obtained his A. grade certificate, in an examination conducted by the N.Z. Incorporated Garage Proprietors’ Association. Mr Hughes is the first mechanic on the West Coast to gain his A Grade Certificate. , Reefton was visited on Sunday night by an electrical storm, and although only an occasional light clap of thunder was heard, the lightning was for a period particularly vivid, especially about 6.30 p.m., when the sky was lit as though by powerful searchlight beams. Weather conditions for the week-end were patchy. Saturday was a showery day and Sunday morning wet. On Sunday afternoon light showers fell. A football team from Greymouth *was to have visited Reefton, but did not make the trip on account of bad weather. At League football, Ikamatua was defeated by Waratah by 22 to 0, at Reefton.
