HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUB OWN COBBESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, July 4. Mr. Chas. Stoop, of Woodstock, has received advice that he has been appointed manager of one of the new Cromwell claims. While on his way home from the forestry plantation on the Ross road, on Saturday last, Mr. Jack Webster fell on a slasher he was carrying, badly lacerating three fingers, necessitating surgical attention. The use of the aeroplane in. cases of emergency was fully demonstrated on Sunday, when a call camo from Greymouth for a hurried trip to Christchurch on account of illness. In the absence of Mi'. A. Nancekivell, Mr. Jack Renton piloted the passenger to Christchurch, taking 90 minutes for the trip, and returning with another passenger this morning. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika School Committee was held last evening; present:. Messrs. A. C Armstrong (Chairman), W. H. Shannon, A. McDougall, J. J. Breeze, H. W. R. Sweney, Rev. G. A. Naylor, W. Et Richards, J. Conning (hon. secretary), F. Chesterman. The Canterbury Board wrote slating application for grant for rebuilding of 5 porch at the school had been made to the Department, but no grant had yet been made. Miss Pett, dental nurse, reported 720 operations for the month; total attendances 140. Pupils treated were from Wataroa 18, Waiho 6, Docherty’s Creek 5, Wehefca 10, Hokitika 23. Patients re-examin.ed 62, new patients 19, The Rector’s report showed the average attendance at the primary school 273.5, roll number 292; secondary school, average attendance 97.3, roll number 106. The school was visited

by the Hon. Minister of Education on Wednesday last, on the same day as the Board’s architect. The sum of £3 11/6 had been subscribed to the fuel fund, a disappointing response. Mr. Huxford had offered plants for the flower garden, which had been received with tanks, and offers foi’ more • flowers will be thankfully received. It was resolved that the fuel fund be continued for another month. Accounts amounting to £l4/1/8 were .presented and passed for payment. Mr. J. J. Breeze, on behalf of the Visiting Committee, reported having visited the school, and recommended that many bumps should be removed from the football ground; also that some men be employed for a few days putting the ground in order. The Chairman reported that he and the Rector visited the High School Board of Governors and met with a good reception, and the Board is quite willing to make a grant if permission is given by the Minister. Since then the Minister of Education had paid

a visit to the district and was waited on by the Chairman and Rector, but no definite assurance could be given by him, but he would look into the matter. The question of the Rector being relieved of a permanent class was also brought up, and the necessity of renewing the porch was brought forward. In the matter of organising something to augment the funds of the Committee, the secretary suggested a euchre tournament. It was resolved that the secretary, Messrs. Breeze and McDougall be a committee to arrange matters. Rev.. Mr. Naylor reported on the progress of the Scripture classes being held in the school.
