WELLINGTON, July 4
■ Further individual representations were made to the Tariff Commission, to-day, by members of the United Kingdom Manufacturers’ and {Representatives’ Association. A reduction from 20 per cent, ad valorem to 10 per cent, was sought on cotton and linen handkerchiefs, but no alteration was desired in the 45 per cent, foreign, dr 20 Australian. It was stated that Japanese were coming on the market as low as 9/- a gross landed, for painted and 12/- a gross for coloured woven, and it xvas suggested that a duty of 2/6 a dozen should be imposed. It was contended that New Zealand tanners could not produce leather of bends weighing 121 b or over in sufficient quaitities to cope with the demand. It was desired that bends be reduced to 121 b, and that the duty should be fixed at twopence a pound for British and Australian leather, with a foreign tariff of unaltered. It was claimed that English leather was far superior to the product of the local tannery. Reductions were also sought in several othei* classes of leather. Representations were made on behalf of British manufacturers ot chinaware, earthenware and porcelainware. This was another case m which the Japenese cheap production came in for special attention. When Professor Murphy asked how the quality compared, the answer was very fairly, and Professor Murp.iy said that is the trouble. The quality is improving. The witness said that from personal knowledge he would say Japanese were working twelve hours a day at least, for six days a week From inquiries he had learned the wages were 2/- a day for males, and elevenpence a day for females.
