Enthusiastic Johnsonians recently celebrated at Lichfield the two hundredth and twenty-third anniversary of the birth of Dr. Johnson, a native of Lichfield. The supper (served by candlelight, as of old) comprised favourite dishes of the great. lexicographer (including ‘roast pig with plum-sauce’). After the board was cleared a huge bowl of punch made its appearance, and “churchwarden pipes were distributed. What the tobacco favoured by the doctor was is not recorded. But Johnson loved his pipe. How he would have revelled in our New Zealand Toasted Tobacco!
