HOW THEY RAN. POLLING DAY TAKES STEEPLES. [SPECIAL TO “STAR”.] , OAMARU, July 1. The field for the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase was .considerably weakened by the defections of Barrington and Nightcap. There was little speed on from the start, and Polling Day, usually troubled by a two-mile journey, was able to go to the front after the first round and, making his own pace, recorded a .very easy win. He was followed opening the second circuit by Antrim Boy, Sports King and Speakeasy, but none of these had any chance of disputing his position, and he was easing up at the post to win by four lengths from Speakeasy, who headed Antrim Boy at the last fence. Quinopal was prominent early, but while he dritfed in the middle stages, he again made a renewed effort in the straight to narrowly beat Antrim Boy for third money. Sports King, Conjurer 11. and Royal Saxon were next.

THE FAVOURITE BEATEN. Helen Gold was sent out a good favourite for the Novice Stakes, but, although executing a good race into second place, she was decisively beaten by Dracula. The latter was quickly in front, and was soon joined by Quite Soon. The pair streaked away from the remainder of the field. Dracula drew, out from Quite Soon turning for home, and Helen Gold and Lycidias moved up. Dracula was not asked to do his best from this stage and still had four lengths to spare at the finish from Helen Gold, who responded well and beat Lycidias by a slightly less margin. Donalda, the last away, was next in front of Adult and Quite Soon.

OAMARU TROT. Red Gold, favourite for tlie Oamaru Trot, broke up soon after the start, and lost sufficient ground to make his chance hopeless. He unwound some fast work along the back stretch, and was not far from the leaders at the far turn, but then compounded. Pekara and Preface disputed the lead with Hytemoana, Ivan de Oro and Black Watclj. Hytemoana had a slight advantage from. Preface entering the straight, with Black Watch and Parnell next. HytemOana surrendered his place when tackled by Preface, who went on to win easily from Hytemoana, who was well clear of Black watch, Parnell, Sansaveno and Ivan De Oro.

POLYDORA’S EASY WIN. Polydora had the easiest of tasks in the Grang'e Handicap, for which she wfls a staunch favourite. She drew wide out and moved off well, and at the end of two furlongs was under a pull in behind the two leaders, Kakara and Waving Corn. She was in second place to Kakara rounding the far turn, and had charge approaching the straight. Mount Boa, with a fast run from the back, joined Polydora, but was shaken off by her as soon as the run home was commenced. Salmo Salar then threw out a challenge on the rails, but he was soon disposed of, and Polydora drew away to win by three lengths from Salmo Salar, who

as comfortably beat Mount Boa. There was another gap to Kakara, and then came Ranelagh and Steeton.

l WINTER HACK TO PALMARY. Silver Sight, first choice for the Winter Hack Handicap-, lead, with Dressy, to the straight entrance, but Silver Sight’s victory seemed assured commencing the run home. Palmary, however, appeared on the scene inside the distance and, finishing much stronger than Silver Sight, beat him home by a length. Dressy weakened into third place, three lengths away, and was followed by Amy Johnson, Water Polo and Trek. WAIKAURA TROT. Sunbrown and Great Antrim were always in the front division of the Waikaura Trot Handicap, and engaged in a sustained finish, the former gaining a length victory. Hytemoana did some fast work in the straight to- get up into third place, and was followed by Almont Cling, Black Watch and Joan De Oro. Red Gold, who was again in keen demand, moved off favourably, but was never in a likely position.

DRACULA’S DOUBLE. Dracula, re-handicapped 51bs. for his previous win, won the Farewell Handicap just as decisively. He shot to the front at the end of two furlongs and had a clear advantage from Repudiation entering the straight. The latter made a game effort in the run home, but could make no impression on the leader, who beat her by two lengths. lan’s March was a fail 1 third, with Grand Finale, Reminder and Helen Gold next.
