IKAMATUA NOTES
[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT,] Mr Bitchener, Acting Minister of Education met a deputation at Ikamatua school on Thursday morning, comprising Mr Holland, M.P., Hon. Mr Mclntyre, M.L.C., Chairman of the Nelson Education Board, Messrs E. J. Scantlebury, J. H. Thornton and members of the Ikamatua School Committee. On behalf of the School Committee, Mr G. B. Mclnroe welcomed the Minister to the district, and congratulated him on appointed to the Cabinet. The deputation pointed out the state of the teacher’s residence, which was not fit to live in, and had been condemned by the Board, also stating that it was impossible to procure a house anywhere in the district. The assistant teacher also boarded with the head-teacher’s mother, there being no other suitable board obtainable. The Chairman of the Board stated that plans for a new cottage had been prepared, and the cost would be very little. Board allowance of £4O had been offered the teacher. Mr Mclntyre stated it would be false economy to pay board allowance when the interest on the money required for a new residence would' be very much less. I The Minister thanked the deputation for their welcome, and the way they had stated their case. He could see for himself that the building was past being habitable, and he would have pleasure in asking Cabinet fertile necessary grant to build a new residence. The visitors were entertained to morning tea, and after having a few words with the children, left for Reefton.
