MEETINGS TO COME. July I—Oamaru.1 —Oamaru. July s—Dannevirke Hunt Club. July B—Waimate District. July 11, 13, 15—Wellington,. July 22 —South Canterbury. July 22 —Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club. July 29—Christchurch Hunt Club. July 27, 29—Gisborne. Landmark: Does not figure in the nominations for the Wellington meeting, but he is in the principal hurdle races at the Grand National meeting. In National Double: No horse has , yet captured the Grand National double. Half a dozen horses with engagements in both races this year are, Peterette, Pahu, High Commissioner, Makeup, Royal Visitor, and Tunbridge. Heroic Colt Named: Mr C. B. Kellow, of Victoria, recently offered a prize of £5/5/- for the best name submitted for his yearling colt by Heroic from Green Peach. The name eventually decided on was Chelandrie, in perpetuation of the memory of Heroic’s granddam Chelandry. More than 70,000 names weer submitted. One competitor suggested the name “Jardine.” “Just fancy,” he said, “hearing punters asking, ,‘What price Jardine?’” Admiral Drake: Admiral Drake is to be given another trial, and Mr J. M. Samson has handed him over to P. T. Hogan at Washdyke to prepare for spring racing. No Good on Soft Tracks: Cricket Bat did not race well at Ashburton on Saturday. Winter conditions are not very much to his liking. Two on End: Errantry is evidently a promising -sort, for he has won two events on end —the Southburn Stakes at South Canterbury last Saturday week apd the Moreton Hack Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. He is a halfbrother to Charlatan, and it is probable that he will eventually find his way into the ranks of jumpers, but he should hold his own while racing on the flat. He is engaged at the Wellington winter meeting. Bronze Eagle: Is in all the principal spring events in Australia, but whether he will stand up to strenuous racing will be unfolded only as the spring meetings advance. His owner, Dr V/. C. Ring, thinks that he will do so.

OAMARU RACES. TO-MORROW’S FIELDS REVIEWED [special to “star.”] CHRISTCHURCH, June 30. The Oamaru Jockey Club’s winter meeting will be held on the Oamaru racecourse to-morrow. The track is stated to be in good order. The programme is as follows, the first race starting at 12.15 p.m.:— Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, 2 miles. —Quinopal 11.2, Barrington 10.12, Antrim Boy 10.11, Night Cap 10.9, Royal Saxon 10.0, Polling Uhy 9.13, Conjurer 11. 9.5, Sports King, Speakeasy, Broadfield 9.0. Recent form is fairly ■well represented in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, but most of the contestants have figured in hurdle races, these including Antrim Boy, Nightcap, Polling Day, Conjurer 11. and Sports King, who are all novices ‘over country. Quinopal lias been off the scene for a long while, and is not likely to be ready, but his stable mate, Barrington, will be a likely proposition if he has not had too severe a, set-back from his cut tendon. Royal Saxon made a bold showing over country at Wingatui, and the experience there should stand to him over Oamaru’s easy obstacles. Nightcap is one of the stayers of the party, and his fall at Ashburton can be overlooked, as that was one of his few mistakes. A fast-riin race should be staged, and Nightcap, Royal Saxon and Antrim Boy should race prominently. Novice Stakes, 6 furlongs (two-year-olds 8.0, upwards 8.4). —Adult, Donald, Dracula, Helen Gold, Last Link, Look Smart, Lycidias, Quite Soon, Some Shambles, Chotta, Haere‘tonu. Class is not by any means in strong evidence in the field carded for the Novice Stakes, for non-winners of a race of 50 sovs., and the evenness, of the contestants will ensure a widespread pool. Some Shamble has had the best record as far as placings are concerned, and his turn should come here. Quite Soon is on the improve, and Helen Gold is entitled to consideration on her recent track work. Haeretonu will not make the trip. Of the remainder, Donalda, Dracula and Look Smart will each have a following, but the best supported will probably be Some Shamble, Helen Gold and Quite Soon.

Oamaru Trot Handicap, 3.45 class; 11 miles. —Colleen Chenault, Garry Thorpe, Guy Bell, Hytemoana, Ivan de Oro, Pekara, Parnell, Preface, Red Gold, Sea Peter, Sir Gowan, Black Watch scr. Almont Cling, Sansaveno 36.

For the Oamaru Trot Handicap, Ivan de Oro, Colleen Chenault and Garry Thorpe jnake the strongest appeal.

Grange Handicap. 1 mile. —Merry Peel 9.10, Ranelagh 9.5, Salmo Salar 9.0, Mount Boa 8.11, Grecian Prince 8.7, Steeton 8.1, Polydora, Town Major, Waving Corn, Kakara 8.0.

The princial event, the Grange Handicap, has attracted some highclass material, including Salnio Salar, who earned distinction at the Dunedin meeting early in the month. Merry Peel has been withdrawn from his engagement. Ranelagh is very well, and a mile will suit him. Mount Boa is gradually declining, while Grecian Prince, although likely to be in the picture for the greater part of the journey, may still be in want of a race or two. Steeton has not run a bad race for a long time, and her third placing at Timaru at the end of a mile and a quarter, after leading for a good way, must not he overlooked. Polydora is the probable favourite. Her brilliant form under big weights amongst the hacks makes her prospects with Bst. look very favourable. The issue appears to bo confined to

those mentioned, and the final Burning up may be in favour of Polydora, Salmo Salax- and Steeton.

Winter Hack Handicap, 1A miles. — Trek 8.10, Shock, Amy Johnson 8.6, Water Polo 5.4, Dressy 8.2, Palmary, High Speed 8.1, Silver Sight 8.0.

The eight carded for the Winter Hack Handicap are far from being good class hacks, and there is no candidate at all standing out. Silver Sight probably has the best credentials over the distance, although he is still a maiden. Trek has disappointed often, but she and Palmary, who deadheated over this distance at Wingatui, will carry good support. Shock and Amy Johnson will both be troubled by the journey, but staying is Water Polo’s strong suit, even if he has no other recommendation. High Speed won over the distance at Wingatui, but evidently, by subsequent feats, he was lucky to earn a success. A close contest is likely, and the final tussle should rest between Silver Sight, Water Polo and Trek.

Waekura Trot Handicap, 3.2 class; li miles.—Athelney, Colleen Chenault, Garry Thorpe, Great Antrim, Guy Bell, Hytemoana, Ivan de Oro, Parnell, Pekara, Preface, Red Gold, Sun Brown, Sir Gowan, Sunny Bingen, Scarlet Runner scr., Black Watch 24, Almont Cling, Sansaveno (P.) 36.

Sunbrown, Ivan de Oro and Red Gold comprise a trio likely to be in most demand in the Waikura Trot Handicap. Sir Gowan will not be a starter.

Farewell Handicap (hack conditions), 6 furlongs.—Arden’s Beauty 9.5, lan’s March 9.0, Grand Finale 8.13, Repudiation, Gilpit 8.4, Reminder 8.3, Roland, Dracula, Helen Gold 8.0.

The concluding event has a fairly even field engaged, and some have recent useful form to recommend them. Repudiation, Grand Finale and Gilpit may attract most attention. NOTES FROM RICCARTON. HORSES FOR OAMARU. [special to “stab”.] CHRISTCHURCH, June 29. Conditions were favourable for training operations at Riccarton to-day, and the No. 7 grass track provided good going. Main interest centred in the work allotted horses to race at Oamaru on Saturday, and all were seen in action. Water Polo, with Minerval for a mate, ran five furlongs in 1.5. Staying seems to be his best asset, and he should do well over a mile and a quartex- on Saturday. Silver Sight was sent a mile, Don Jose joining him at five furlongs. A fast pace was not sought, the full journey taking 1.45 3-5, and the last six furlongs 1.19 2-5. Silver Sight has a chance to break his maiden status at Oamaru. Some Shamble was exercised on the sand, as was Grecian Prince. The formex’ is likely to be in keen demand for the Novice Stakes on Saturday. Grecian Prince will not make the trip. Helen Gold ran six furlongs in 1.17 2- the last three in 39 2-5. A Eastwood will ride her to-morrow in the Novice Stakes. Polydora and Ranelagh, carrying even light weights, were companions over six furlongs: The first two were covered in 23 3-5, the first three in 36 3- aiid the full journey in 1.15 2-5. Polydora finished a half length in front, going strongly. Quite Soon reeled off five furlongs in 1.4 3-5, the last three in 39 2-5. This Shambles filly is improving, and should race well at Oamaru. Shatter, who has had only a few short sprints of late, was galloped over five furlongs to-day, in company with Nightly, 'rhe pair finished almost together in good time, Shatter holding his own with the youngster, who does' not appear to be too sound at present. Merry Peel has been withdrawn from the Grange Handicap at Oamaru. He was accepted for on his telegraphed weight of 9.5, but a mistake was made in transmission from Dunedin, his official impost, as published in the Dunedin papers, being 9.10. The correction was not telegraphed until Tuesday evening, and Merry Peel’s owners at once cancelled his engagement. Some of the riding engagements for to-morrow’s racing at Oamaru are as follow:—J. W. Jennings: Some Shamble; A. Eastwood: Silvex’ Sight, Helen Gold, Steeton; G. Humphries: Polydora, Quite Soon; L. J. Ellis: Water Polo, Gilpit, Ranelagh, Adult; A. E. Ellis: lan’s March; R. Beale: Royal Saxon; J. Walker: Speakeasy; B. Brodie: Salmo Salar. SOUTHLAND SPORTSMAN KILLED.

GORE, June 30. Sam G. Inder, prominent in Southland racing circles for half a century, lost his life at an early hour this morning, when a motor car driven by a man named Healey, overturned in Gore. The driver escaped with minor injuries, Inder being pinned under the vehicle. VICTORIAN G.N. HURDLES. MELBOURNE, June 29. The acceptors for the Grand National Hurdles on Saturday are: Walter Scott 11.7, Lynden 10.12, Ceilidh 9.13, Dunkeld 9.11, Pitoota 9.9, Baayna 9.7, Belar 9.5, Laniroi 9.4, Zygon 9.3, Prime Seal 9.2, Subrosa 9.0. WINOOKA’S FIRST RACE IN U.S.A. NEW YORK, June 28. Winooka’s owners to-day announced that the horse would make his first American appearance on the Hawthorne track at Chicago. He will be shipped to Chicago along with Pillow Fight and Tea Trader, on July 10. The Hawthorne Club officials have added two special stakes to their list in order to attract Winooka. They have specified that the distances shall not be beyond one mile and one-six-teenth. One possibly will be of six furlongs. They will be run with 2500 dollars of an added purse. PRINCE OF WALES STAKES. LONDON, June 29. The Prince of Wales Stakes resulted: — Raymond 1 Dastur 2 Tavern 3 Eleven started. Won by a length and a-half; four lengths between second and third.
