BURGLARS SURPRISED

HELD UP BY GUN. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERSTON N., June 30. Three young men were surprised when breaking into a general store at Manukau at two o’clock this morning, and were held until the arrival of the police, when they were arrested. They are stated to have had a Wellington car in their possession. An employee of the store, who sleeps on the premises, was disturbed. After investigating, he telephoned for the owner of the store, Powell, who speedily arrived and held up the three men with a shot gun until the arrival of the police. The method of entry into the store wv.s by cutting out a portion of the door. NELSON SAFES ROBBED. NELSON, June 30. Three safes on the premises of Neale and Hadclow, grain and seed merchants, were blown open during lhe night, and a. sum between sixty and seventy pounds stolen. The burglary was carried out apparently in a professional manner, bags being used to deaden the sound. LATER. It is evident that the safe burglary was deliberately planned and carried, out by no amateur hands. Bags of meal and seeds, and about 50 empty sacks were used to deaden sound. Entrance was gained at the back part of the premises. Two cash boxes were removed. One contained trust papers, while the other money and a number of documents, valuable only to the firm. These were found in the railway yards adjoining, the money only being taken.
