Johnstone (Auckland) will succeed Mr Treadwell as Vice President. —Press Assn. Mr K. P. Kania, of the Invercargill Technical College, will take up his appointment as Science and Mathematics Master at the Greymouth Technical School on Monday, in succession to Mr B. M. Davis. Mr P. K. R. Whitehouse, of the Timaru Boys’ nigh School, who has been relieving master at Greymouth, pending the arrival of Mr Kania, concluded his duties this afternoon. The death occurred at the residence of his daughter, Mrs J. O’Connell, this morning, of Harry Coppersmith, a pioneer resident of the West Coast, aged 71 years. The deceased, who was a native of Dunedin, came to Greymouth when only two years of age, and lived all his life on the Coast, following the occupations of a butcher and a miner. He took a prominent part in local politics and industrial matters, and was Mayor of Brunner, and first Mayor of Runanga. He was a President of the Miners’ Union and Medical Association for many years, and represented the State miners at the Federation of Labour. The late Mr. Coppersmith was one of the first members of the Bruiiner Druids’ Lodge. His wife predeceased him about fifteen years ago, and his son three years ago. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs J. O’Connell (Runanga), three brothers, Thomas (Brunner), John (Westport), and Charles (Mosgiel), and one sister, Mrs Champion (Christchurch). The funeral will take place at Karoro Cemetery, on Sunday, leaving Runanga by special train. The death occurred, this morning, at the Greymouth Hospital, of Mr Henry Russell Kirk, aged 61 years. Deceased was a native of Manchester, England. He had been a resident of Greymouth during the past i twentyseven years. Prior to being appointed secretary of the Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Union, a position which he held for sixteen consecutive years until 1930, he was a seaman on the Union Steamship Company’s coastal vessels. Outside his official duties, his principal concern was- the organising of concerts for charitable purposes, and through his efforts, many families in need, were given relief. He was the Greymouth representative of the Seamen’s and Firemen’s Union, and contributed many poems to the “Transport Worker,” under the pen-name of “The Mixer.” Deceased is survived by a widow, five daughters, Mrs E. Cressy, Cobden: Mrs H. Sheehan, Ngahere; and Misses Ruby (Timaru), Coral and Veronica (Greymouth), and two sons, Henry and George, both of Greymouth. The funeral will be at Karoro on Sunday, leaving Holy Trinity Church at 1.45 p.m.
