HOKITIKA NOTES
[OUB OWN COEBESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, May 13. Arthur Gillman, 14 years, son of Mr and Mrs Gillman, of the Pioneer Hotel, received severe burns on Thursday last, as the result of attempting to light a fire with turpentine. The flames burnt his arms, legs and face. He was removed to the Westland Hospital. At a meeting of the Hokitika Chry santhemum Society, last night, the statement of accounts in respect to the recent show showed a profit of £l3/9/-. The produce stall showed a falling-off on previous years, also the doors, but the show was one of the best held, and' the result was considered very satisfactory, considering the times and increase in prize money. Hearty congratulations were tendered two of the members (Messrs H. Fitzgerald and Lincoln) on their success at Hokitika and Greymouth shows. Several suggestions were made for improving the schedule for the next show. A vote of thanks was accorded the secretary (Mr A. W. Yarrall) and Mrs Yarrall for their work in connection with the show. The last three tides have carried away not only the sand' brought in during the past week, but have left a high bank on the beach a few feet from the tennis court. Last evening’s position was the worst since the erosion started on this occasion.
