The Qovernor-General before leavin? yesterday for the Islands, sent are quest to the Press Association tha Her Excellency should be described as “Lady Bledisloe,” not “the Ladj Bledisloe.” The appointment of thf Chief Justice, Sir M. Myers, to act as Deputy of the Governor-General dur ing Lord Bledisloe’s absence was last night, gazetted.—Press Assn. Miss R. Ellery returned, yesterday, from a visit to Timaru. Miss E. Fitzgerald arrived, yesterday, from Wellington, on a visit to Kumara. Mr W. Rathbun, Junr., returned by yesterday’s express from Christchurch. Mi* A. Meihana, of the Railway Department, Greymouth, left yesterday on a holiday visit to Oamaru. The death has occurred at Princeton, New Jersey, of Mr Handyke, poet, essayist, and diplomat. He was aged 80 years. No improvement was reported today, in the condition of Captain Mollinson, who is an inmate of the Grey River Hospital.

Rev. Brother Gerald arrived, yesterday, from Auckland, on account of the serious illness of his father, Mr J. Murphy.

Mrs L. D. McGlashan will leave tomorrow, for Nelson, to attend the Jubilee celebrations of the Nelson Girls’ College.

The marriage of Miss Leah Hogan, of Greymouth, to Mr Cecil Raymond Sparks, of Auckland, will take place to-day, at Khyber Pass Church, Auckland.

Mr J. Murphy, High Street, who has been seriously ill, underwent an operation at the Grey River Hospital yesterday. He was to-day reported to be progressing satisfactorily.

Lady Wilford and Miss Isobel Wilford, who have been on a short visit to New Zealand, are returning to England by the Rangitane, leaving Wellington to-morrow.

A vote of condolence with Mr T. A. Johnston (Greymouth Harbour Engineer), in the death of his father, was passed last evening by the Harbour Board, on the motion of the Chairman (Mr P. J. McLean).

There was a large attendance at the Cobden Gymnasium last evening when the members of the Cobden Fire Brigade held a social evening to welcome home Mr and Mrs L. Anderson. The hall was tastefully decorated by the members of the Brigade. Miss Abbie’s orchestra supplied the music for the dances, and the supper arrangements were in the hands of the Brigade’s energetic ladies’ committee. During supper, Captain Gilmour, on behalf of the Brigade, presented Mr and Mrs Anderson witli a. silver tea service, and congratulated Mr Anderson on joining the ranks of the benedicts and wished him and his wife every happiness, although regretting that owing to Mr and Mrs Anderson living in Greymouth, it had become necessary for Mr Anderson to resign from the Brigade, for which he had carried out the duties of secretary for over ten years. Mr Anderson suitably replied. During the evening, Miss Lopdell, Messrs F. Smith, T. Clarke, H. Anderson, and J. Allen contributed musical items.
