LOCAL BODIES' ELECTIONS.

[to the editor.] Si r> _A letter appeared ih your issue of yesterday under the pen-name of “Do Your Bit.” Your correspondent’s opinion is correct in advocating that men of established business ability with the'best braips should allow' themselves to be nominated for the forthcoming elections for seats on the Municipal Council, Hospital Board and Power Board. However, the ratepayers invariably vote en bloc for those persons who belong to certain

“tickets” or who are representatives of friendly societies, parties or sects. This robs the election of all interest and so the ratepayers with business ability and vision decline to come forward under local conditions and circumstances.' Trusting elections in future years will be conducted bh a system of candidates’ merits only.— I am, etc., RIP VAN WINKLE.
