BACCARAT SCANDAL

POLICE SEIZE GARDS BERLIN. February 17. A great baccarat scandal has been brought to light by a police appeal for evidence of false play in the Club of the West. It is stated that a number of men of position have already committed suicide because they had been ruined through gaming losses in various Berlin clubs , and especially in the Club of the West. This institution, it now appears, was raided by police in November. Only' the croupier was on the premises, and he strengthened the suspicions of the police by 7 pretending to have mislaid. the key 7 of the box in which the cards were kept. Insistence ultimately resulted in the production of the key, but when the box was opened the croupier tried to mix up the cards. He was, however, prevented from doing this, and the police carried off seven packs. Ever since this the gambling experts m the police prefecture have been racking their heads over the order in which the cards lay, and they have now come to the conclusion that five of the packs were ordered in accordance with one or two systems which gave the croupier and his supposed accomplices control over the game. But to secure a conviction the. evidence of persons who have suffered from this manipulation must be secured.
