SPORTSMEN’S RIVER CRUISE
IN SEARCH OF GAME. Two Greymouth sportsmen, in search of game, launched a boat recently in Lake Haupiri, and paddled down Haupiri Creek, into the Kopara River. From there they followed the river down, through the rapids, and ideal fishing waters, into the Ahaura River, where they pitched camp for the night. They experienced some thrills in negotiating the rapids, but came through without mishap. From there they proceedeed to Starvation Point, but found nothing more exciting to shoot than a few shags. After spending a night amongst hungry mosquitoes, a start was made through the Ahaura Gorge. Here magnificent river scenery, the like of which is unequalled in noted rivers of scenic fame in New Zealand, captured their admiration. The river, from this point, winds for about fifteen miles, through high bush and ferncovered cliffs, which are water-washed on either side and tower to a height of from 300 to 400 feet. After negotiating a few small rapids, a second gorge, bounded by high cliffs oilers another instance of scenic beauty. Through Ahaura, and on to Greymouth, by way of the river, nothing of outstanding scenic attraction was noted. The trip, and their search for game occupied. a week, and the distance by river from the Haupiri Lake to Greymouth. was close on 100 miles. It is said that there is an abundance of deer, ducks and fish, at practically any point along the route.
