NOTES FROM RICCARTON. GALLOPS FOR TRENTHAM. [SPECIAL TO “STAR.”] CHRISTCHURCH, March 11. Favourable conditions again prevailed for track work at Riccarton todav The outside of the course proper‘and the No. 6 grass track were open, but the bulk of the was confined to tlie plough, which n<i.d a liberal watering overnight. On the Plough: Silver Scorn ami Berate strode over six furlongs in 1.1 < 4-5, the first halt in 51 4-ssecs. A Speedy Filly: Fracas, under a light weight, mustered up her usual speed in covering six furlongs in 1.16 3-5. She ran the first three furlongs in 36 1-5, and the first half in 49 2-ssecs. This filly will keep the opposition busy at Trentham on Friday. Rocket and Rebel Song were given a useful task over a mile and a-quarter. A fast pace was not sought, the first half taking 54secs. and the full journey 2.14 3-5. A Good Effort:
Shatter (A. Russell) showed pleasing form by reeling off six furlongs in 1.15 3-5. Imperial Spear accompanied him over the last half mile, which occupied 50secs. Both are booked to leave for Trentham to-morrow night. Zeebrugge was restricted to a strong gallop over seven furlongs, taking 1.36, and Heather Glow beat Morepork over six furlongs in 1.17, the first half in 50secs.
An Undoubted Galloper: Cricket Bat was responsible for another sterling effort over seven furlongs, reducing his time of 1.28 1-5, registered on Thursda,y to 1.27 3-5. He ran the first three in 1.3 4-5, and came home over the last six furlongs in 1.15 2-5. Cricket Bat executed his task very freely, and a reproduction of his recent track work will make him a, favourable proposition at Trentham. True Shaft, Chief Light and Desert Song were sent out. to gallop five furlongs together, but they failed to ge'. away in line, and True Shaft, who was last to leave, was timed to cover the distance in 1.5'. Both True Shaft and Chief Light will leave for Trentham to-morrow.
Eupator was doing better than Juniper over the business stages of a six furlong task, taking 1.19 3-5. The former is a doubtful visitor to Trentham, owing to the likelihood of a hard track there.
Concentrate and Martian Chief strode over seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5, the last three in 38 3-ssecs. The latter, in receipt of weight, finished slightly in. front. Sore:
Silver Sight, with Don Jose for a mate for half a mile, ran six furlongs in 1.20, coming home the last three in 39secs. The former, who is to race next in the colours of Mr. A. Beban, of Greymouth, went very scratchily over tho first part, .and is evidently suffering from the effects of working on the hard ground.
On the Course Proper: Gay Crest and Tout le Mond were companions over seven furlongs, carrying even weights, and covering the distance in 1.30 2-5, the last half in 51 secs. The latter had a neck advantage at the post, but Gay Crest’s display was nevertheless a, big improvement on recent track essays. True Shaft's Brother:
A. McAulay has broken in a yearling by Arrowsmith from the Demosthenes mare Thea, thus a brother to True Shaft. Thea has a foal at foot by Polazel last season, and is now in foal to Nightmarch. From Blenheim:
Lady Valkyrie, by Valkyrie from Black Eye Susan, owned by Mr. H. C. Newman, of Marlborough, is now a member of Airs. J. Campbell’s team. Change of Venue:
The three-year-old filly Shamata. by Shambles from Matata, owned by Mrs. I', rhomson, of Dunedin, has joined Barr’s stable at. Ricarton. c AUSTRALIAN CUP TO TOPICAL GAINE CARRINGTON SCORES MELBOURNES, March 12. The weather was fine and warm, and there was a large attendance for the third day of the V.R.C. autumn meeting. Phocis led all the way in the Autumn Hurdles, and won. The rider, Fullerton, was associated with the gelding’s win last week. Winooka made amends for his Newmarket defeat by a brilliant win in the Leonard Stakes. He was not extended. The rider, Pike, won this event previously on Greenline, which was unplaced yesterday. Gaine Carrington registered his first Victorian win, leading throughout in llii' Lloyd Stakes Io heat the fastfinishing Kuvera. The. winner is now trained by Cecil Good by, and is owned by lift* bookmaker, Mr. .1. Phillips. Topical won the Cup, in a brilliant finish, on the rails. Il scored in the last few strides. The trainer; the veteran W. Kelso, won the Melbourne Cup with Statesman. Topical’s rider. Knox, was second with Yarramba in the Melbourne Cup. Yarramba was well fancied to-day, but ran badly Windbag, the sire of Topical, also got Winooka. * Shakuni, trained by the former New Zealander, Geo. Price, was prominent always and won the Ascot Vale Stakes narrowly. The time, 1.11, is the fastest ever recorded by a juvenile at Flemington.
An Adelaide representative, Magna Charla, finished brilliantly in the Farewell Handicap, and won in the last stride. The runner-up is also owned and trained at Adelaide. G. Daly, the rider of Ceildh in the Hurdles, was suspended for two months for crowding' the field too sharply al the home turn the first I ime.
