McLEAN PARK

COMMITTEE MEETING. Mr W. Hannam pre tided over a good attendance of membes and others interested at the quarterly meeting of : the McLean Bark Mai agement. held in the Blaketown Hall ’ast evening. The Secretary (Mr A. Agnew) presented the following report, which was read and adopted: — I have to report cn behalf of the Committee that sim a their election to office the work of improving and developing McLean Park has been maintained. Shortly after taking office the Committee deemed it advisable to fence the nor h and east sides of the Park, and thi 5 has been done. A path of turf has Ir en laid from the

5 entrance to the kioi k, and has been of great benefit to all. The amusement facilities have been kept in good j repair, and to these has been added a i “giant’s stride,” which has proved very popular with the children. The ice cream kiosk was reopened in January, and during that month we obtained good returns, but last month owing to wet. weather, the revenue dropped considerably. In this matte it is to be regretted that we h ive to compete against private stallholders, -whereas if all the money wmt through the Park stall, it would result in our funds being increased. The ground has always been available for the use of picnic parties and quite a number of district and institute picnics have been held on the Park. To meet our financial difficulties various functions have been held. In December a children’s fancy dress ball was held and in January a gala day, both functions being fairly well patronised. The matter of top-dressing is at present receiving our serious consideration, and in this connection we have been able to secure from the Borough Council a considerable amount of spoil from the clean-

ing of the streets, and this has been ' spread on the Park. An application ’ for a grant of £3OO from an alluvial ( gold art union has been made, and we are hopeful of securing this and utilising the money for this purpose. It is the intention of the Committee to hold a concert and Miss K. Williams has kindly undertaken to organise a suitable programme for us. The usual gala day on Easter Monday will be held, and as our commitments are fairly heavy, the Committee are leaving no stone unturned to make a success of (his. The thanks of the Committee are extended to the Chairman and members of the Harbour Board, the Borough Council and to Mr Fairmaid (Borough Engineer) for the advice and assistance he has given us; also to the members of the Blaketown Ladies’ Committee and the Civic Band and residents who have come forward and assisted us when we have been organising and running functions in aid of the Park. A matter of deep regret is the wanton destruction that takes place at times with the Park property, and in this matter we would like the co-operation of residents generally. It is very disappointing to members of the Committee, after working hard to keep the amusement material in repair to find them knocked down. In one instance the ropes on the swings were cut, leaving one strand intact, which, had it gone unnoticed. might have resulted in a serious accident.

Mr P. .1. McEnaney’s offer of a load of firewood, to be disposed of in aid of the Park funds, was accepted with 1 hanks, as also was the offer of Mr P. G. Smith to run a side-show at the gala.

The Secretary and Chairman were deputed to interview the Power Board regarding the installation of lights at the Park.
