MOTHER KILLED
ATTEMPT TO SAVE CHILD SYDNEY, January 7. Mrs. Doris Hastead, 24, of Highstreet, Miller’s Point, was fatally injured yesterday, and her baby daughter, Dorothy, 3 years, was critically hurt, when they fell 80ft. to Hicksonroad, Miller’s Point, city. The young woman lost her life in a desperate attempt to save her child who was tottering on the edge of the steep drop. Mrs. Halstdad took the child to play on the heights above Hicksonroad, where there is a splendid view of the harbour, and where she could keep the infant in sight. The little girl played around on the grass for some time, and then, unnoticed, crept away. She toddled over to the Iron railings that protect the drop, and climbed through themThe mother noticed the child as she pushed herself through the railings. She rushed over to save her. She leaned over the railings, but as she grasped the child she overbalanced and crashed over the edge. Robert Saint, of Mary-street, Surry Hills, and George Collins, of Alisonroad. Randwick, ■were nearby at the time, and saw the woman and child fall. Mrs. Halstead struck the road below with terrific force, and her skull, right thigh, and right wrist were fractured. The child’s fall was broken by some wires, but her spine was badly injured, and she suffered severe shock. The Central District Ambulance took them to Sydney Hospital. Mrs. Halstead died shortly after admission, but the doctors expect to save the child’s life.
