CARNIVAL WEEK ABANDONED

SHOW WEEK ARRANGEMENTS. Mr J. Tennent presided over an attendance of the following at a meeting of business men held last evening, in connection with the proposed Carnival Week: —Messrs S. B. White, K. Williams, R. Anderson, F. Johnston. J. Boucher, W. Pring, A. H. Wilde, A. H. Paterson, W. D. Murray, J. Truman, J. R- Anderson, J. H. Hay ton, and J. North. It was decided, on the motion of Messrs Truman and Williams, that the carnival week proposal be abandoned, but that the Committee’s liability to the Horticultural Society, amounting to about £2O, be honoured. Those present emphatically condemned the majority of the businessmen of the town for the poor support thev had given the Committee, and pointed out that the carnival was to be run as a means of stimulating business. Messrs Murray, Williams, and R Anderson were appointed to wait on the Horticultural Society in an endeavour to get permission to conduct a chocolate alley at their summer show, which is to be held on the Saturday prior to the A. and P. Show. It was decided that, the business people be requested to make Show Week as attractive as possible as a shopping week, by advertising, special lighting and' displays. Messrs Truman, Hayton, and A. Anderson were deputed to cancass the drapers in an endeavour to have a mannequin parade run in conjunction with a concert to be held in the Town Hall on Show night (Friday). It was decided that an endeavour be made to have the shops open on the Thursday night prior to the show for display purposes only.
