LIPTON GIFTS
PAYMENT DELAYED LONDON, November 28. The trustees of the estate of Sir Thomas J. Lipton anjio.un.ee that they are at present unable to make arlangem.ents with regard to the disposal of the fends bequeathed under Sir Thomas Lipton’s will “for Ihe benefit of the poor mothers of the working classes of Glasgow and their children.”
The reason giveii for this delay is stated to be the “very large payments of death duties and other taxes it has been necessary to make in respect of assets both at home and abroad—which tatter assets are not yet realisable.”
Sir Thomas left £lOO,OOO for the poor of Glasgow apd Cambuslang (Lanark), less two sums of £lO,OOO each, which he handed over during his lifetime. Thus £BO,OOO has yet to be given to them. Some of the difficulty experienced by the trustees of the estate of Sir Thomas Lipton with regard to the disposal of the funds bequeathed under his will is due to the fact that much of the property is in the United States and Ceylon. Exhaustive inquiries have been necessary to estimate the total value of the' property outside the United Kingdom, and, faced with the fluctuating values of the past year, the task has not been an easy one.
