TENNIS TEST

U.S.A. PLAYERS APATHETIC. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Received January 13, 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 13. The final tennis test results were: McGrath beat Gledhill 6/2, 6/4; Allison beat Hopman 3/(>, 6/3, 6/1. Quist, beat Van Ryn 7/5, 6/3; Vines and Gledhill beat Crawford and Hopman 5/7, 5/7, 6/2, 7/5, 6/3. There was a poor attendance. Against McGrath and Quist, Gledhill and Van Ryn respectively gave a very indifferent display. They did not exert themselves in the slightest degree, and conveyed the impression they had too much tennis, and for the time being had lost, interest. Allison was also lethargic, when opposing Hopman, until when the Australian led 6/3, 3/0, Allison exerted himself and with Hopman falling away, won an uninteresting match. The doubles game, however, was a thrilling struggle, with Crawford giving his best display for years. Hopman was out of touch, and the American team work triumphed in the end. Gledhill was a dynamic force in the last three sets, volleying, smashing and driving to great, effect.
