A New York cablegram- stated that President-elect Roosevelt was better, but was confined to his bed.
Mr and Mrs H. Hamer, of Kumara, will return by to-morrow’s express, after visiting England.
Mr H. P. Ledsham, of the Railways Department, Greymouth, will commence annual leave to-morrow.

The death is announced from Sydney, of Mr Samuel McKay, managing director of the Sunshine Harvegter Works, Victoria, aged 69. He was one of the official advisers to the Australia delegation to the Ottawa Conference.
The funeral of the late Mr Robert Gore took place at Karoro Cemetery yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended. The pall-bearers were members of the Druids’ Lodge. Rev. W. A. Beaumont conducted the services.
Among the passengers who arrived from Christchurch by Saturday’s express were: Mr and Mrs P. Beck, Mr and Mrs J. P. Riordan, Mr and Mrs D. R. Gibbens, Mr and Mrs P. F. Thorpy, Mrs H. Lima, Mrs W. D. Murray, Miss E. Sullivan, Messrs A. H. McKane, A. Grogan, R. Groom, A. Kyle, P. Power, W. Dove, H. Leach, and T. McNeil.
The London “Sunday Times’s” Moscow correspondent cables: Despite official insistence that the death of M. Stalin’s second wife “Hope Hallelujah,” aged 31, was a purely private event, thousands who had never 1 seen her, followe’d the cortege for foul’ miles to a monastery graveyard at Moscow. Her picture had not previously been published, and even her name, hitherto, was unknown. M. Stalin was absent from the funeral.
The death occurred in Christchurch on Friday, of Mr. John Richard Wallace, of Kaikoura, at the age of 54 years, Eldest son of Mrs. L. M. Wallace, of Kaikoura, he was for a number of years farming a large area at Glen Wye, Marlborough. At various times, too, he followed agricultural pursuits in his home district of Kaikoura and on the West Coast. He also engaged in stock-dealing and auctioneering at Kaikoura and on the West Coast. Some four years ago, while working for the Public Works Department at Parnassus, he was injured in an accident. Mr. Wallace married the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Shields, of Kaikoura, and leaves a son and daughter.
