ENGLAND v. VICTORIA
PROMINENT BATSMEN FAIL VOCE & ALLEN BOWL WELL [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] MELBOURNE, November 11. lu the cricket match, England v. Victoria, to-day, the weather was cool but threatening. The wicket, was in good order. Bowes is twelfth man foi England. The attendance was 16,000. The gate receipts were £1672. Woodfull won the toss, and batted. Allen opened the bowling at a good pace. A sensation was caused when with the score at eight, Woodfull touched a short rising ball, and was well caught< at second slip. Only six more runs were added, when Rigg was clean-bowled by Allen, who took his leg stump. Voce, with fast and swerving deliveries, also made a good impression. He had the batsmen in difficulties several times.
The two left-handers, Darling and O’Brien, had narrow escapes, but they gradually settled down to steady batting. Darling was a little more enterprising than his partner, but when he was 42, he had a narrow escape from being bowled by Verity. Three runs later, however, he was deceived by an extra fast ball from Voce, and was bowled. He batted neatly for 78 minutes, hit four fours, and made 45. Oakley, the next batsman, varied quiet play by scoring fifteen runs in one over off Voce.
The visitors’ fielding was slack, and was much below the standard of Chapman’s team.
O’Brien played a stubborn innings and batted for 141 minutes. He scored 45. He was easily caught at leg Oakley gave a good bating display. He reached 50 runs in 72 minutes. The Victorian wickets fell rapidly after tea, Voce getting Barnett and Nagel in the second over. Duckworth was in splendid form behind the wickets, he making many saves at short stop.
Oakley gave a splendid exhibition of superb off driving. He was batting for two hours, and scored 83 not out. He hit eight boundaries. Allen and Voce both created good impressions. They both bowled with virility and judgment. Allen bowled 12 overs and 12 no balls. Only three were scored' off Voce in fourteen overs. Eight no balls were scored off Mitchell, Who kept a poor 'length. Verity was accurate, but lacked devil. England commenced to bat at five o’clock. A fairly good indication of the visitors’ batting strength was that Allen was one of the opening batsmen. Allen was neat. The Nawab of Pataudi had an ovation. He was Slow but wristy.
Nagel was fairly fast, and in splendid form. He bowled five overs, including two maidens, for six runs, and was on the wicket. Scores: — VICTORIA —First Innings.
