The Mayor referred to the recom mendation in the Economy Commission’s report for closing the Stamp Office here, and that he had forwarded a protest. He said the tendency was to centralise in the big cities, which was detrimental to a country. The West Coast would suffer a distinct disadvantage if the recommendation. is approved. Mr Elcock pointed out the extra cost that people would be put to and the inconvenience of long delays. He referred to the fact that Mr Kitchingham, of Greymouth, was convening a meeting of representatives of all local bodies on the Coast to make a com bined protest. On the motion of Cr. The question of the extension of Sewell Street northwards was deferred till finances permit. Among the correspondence was a lettei’ from the Chairman of the Greymouth Harbour Board referring to the proposal of the Economy Commission to abolish the annual pay, ment of £12,000 by the Government to the Grey Harbour Board, and asking that a strong protest be made. The Mayor explained the circumstances that led to the making of the payment, and said it would be absolutely unfair to cease making the payment and would be a breach of contract. The amount agreed upon had already been reduced from £15,000 to £12,000. If the recommendation is carried out the Board would be embarrassed. On the motion of the Mayor it was resolved to make a strong protest. Glacier.
