CENTENARIAN’S BIRTHDAY

COAST PIONEER-MINER On The '’occasion Of his 101st. birthday, Mr Thomas’-Brown, an inmate of the Greymouth Old People’s Home, -was -yesterday afternoon, tendered acelebration at the ’Home, When more than sixty friends gathered to offer (heir congratulations. ’Mr'Brdwn, Who is a native of Denmark/is one of the, earliest gold miners who settled at Welshmen-s -near -Marsden. He -arrived on the West Coast in the early ’sixties, to follow the■ calling of the gold miner, until age forced his retire-, ment. Included ; amoiig those present were the Chairman of the Hospital Board, Mr R. McTaggart, and Messrs R. A. Barrowman, and H. G. Carter,' members of the Board; also the Mayor Mr J. W. Greenslade, Dr J. F. C. Modre (Superintendent), ’and Miss C* Lord (Matron) of the Hospital. Mr McTaggart proposed a toast to Mr Brown, congratulating him on attaining shell an age, and having lived such a cle’an and temperate life. The Mayor also offered his congratulations, and referred also to the splendid preparation for the celebration, made by the Doctor, and the Matron. Messrs Barrowman and Garter also 'made eulogistic, reference to the guest of honour, add added their congratulations. Messrs W. Waugh, and A. Kilpatrick responded on behalf of Mr Brown, and thanked the Hospital Board Tor the thought-; ful, and thorough preparations made, in the celebration of the centenary of Mr Brown’s -birthday. Welshmen’s, which was so named ‘some seventy years ago, when Francis Mack add Rose Bros, were mining there, is situated about eight miles from den. .
