, SALES PRESSURE INCREASED. According to a report in “Printer’s Ink,” thirteen American Tobacco Companies invested nearly -£1,000,000 more in newspaper advertising in 1931 than in 1930, while twelve wearingapparel concerns increased their expenditure nearly £70,000. The report also indicates that, although the number of national advertisers in newspapers was less in 1931, than in 1930, the average expenditure pei' advertiser was slightly higher. Tobacco advertisers spent a total of £5,500,000 in newspapers year, and sixtyfour food advertisers appropriated for that medium £4,000,000. The amount, appropriated for newspaper advertising by automotive, tyre and

radio companies during 1930 was £40,000,000. Reviewing the whole field of industry the report states that the average expenditure per advertiser was slightly higher in 1931 than in the year preceding.
