REEFTON NOTES

[OTJB OWN COBBESPONDENT.J REEFTON, August 29. A large number of Reefton residents visited Westport on Saturday for the football match and an enjoyable day was spent despite bad weather. Several drivers report having had a rough trip home at night, the run through the gorge being heavy going with high wind at times and heavy rain. A number of small slips are reported on the road, but a few hours work by roadmen will clear these. Owing to the non-arrival of the Warriors’ hockey team from Waiuta on Saturday, the match which "was to have been played a.gainst Reefton Ladies did not take place.

The funeral of the late Alfred Heald took place on Sunday afternoon, moving from the late residence at 1.30 to the Suburban Cemetery. Despite the inclement weather a large number of friends assembled. Services at the graveside and also at the house, were conducted by Rev. W. Bell, Vicar of St. Stephen’s Church. Owing to the state of the ground, and the bad weather, football matches which were to have been held at Reefton on Sunday were postponed. Reefton experienced a very unpleasant week-end. Saturday was a showery day and Saturday night very stormy with high wind accompanied by heavy rain. Sunday was showery with at times a heavy steady downpour of rain. Travellers report that small streams are all swollen. The temperature is much milder and this has probably caused a thaw in high country, thus filling the creek.
