LORD RUTHERFORD’S PORTRAIT.
NELSON, August 15
Acting on the advice of the Gover-nor-General, during his address at Christchurch, the Nelson College Old Boys’ Association, has cabled to London inquiring the possibilities of securing a replica of Oswald Birley’s portrait of Lord Rutherford, of Nelson, recently ordered by the Royal Society and hung at Burlington House.
For some months past, the Association has been endeavouring to securea portrait of the famous scientist, but it is felt that a replica of this portrait would possess much added interest.
SNOW IN WAIRARAPA. CARTERTON, August 15.
The recent snow storm which visited Wairarapa has proved, particularly in Maungarakei district, very disas trous. So heavy was the fall that the dividing fences between several properties were all covered. Sheep and cattle, in their wandering to find feed, became badly boxed in the gullies. The snow drifts were from 15 to 20 feet deep, and the heavy frost which followed the fall,'froze the surface and made feteep glissades, down which the sheep and cattle slid. Large numbers of sheep were affected with snow blind ness. In their aimless rambling, many were drowned in the creeks and tern: porary lagoons, formed in the gullies. For over a week the snow covered all feed, both sheep and cattle starving to death. The weight of snow broke huge limbs off the forest trees, and this green stuff was avidly devoured even to the bark.
The position is now improving though further back on the hills, there are still deep drifts, and losses of stock will be considerable.
