HOCKEY TEST MATCH

N.Z. DEFEATS AUSTRALIA.

[by CABLE —PRESS ASSX. —COPYRIGHT.]

SYDNEY, August 14

There was beautiful weather for the hockey Test for. the Manning Cup, when a crowd of 5000 witnessed New Zealand defeat Australia by 7 goals to nil.

New Zealand attacked from the first bully and never let up until the final whistle. There was great combination between Turbitt. Bay and Anthony, while Joblin was a tower of strength in the halves, and Spiers and Ewan provided a splendid defence. Australia’s defence was weak on the left side, and among the poor forward display, Cormies’ work stood out. Bay made history, winning a penalty bully in a Test match. Half-time found the New Zealand team leading by 3 goals to nil. The New Zealand team was unchanged in the second half, but Australia replaced Tart at centre-half with Wanless, without avail. The New Zealand forwards were irresistible, Turbitt playing the game of his career. Anthony suffered a minor hurt. Spiers staved off several strong attacks in the closing stages, when Australia showed some patches of brighter work. Nice passing by Munro at centre-half was responsible for three goals. The scorers were: Turbitt four, Bay two, and Reid one.
