HITLER’S DEMANDS REFUSED.
[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]
BERLIN, August 13
Herr Hitler interviewed General Von Schleicher and Chancellor Von Papen, who informed him that President Hindenburg insisted on the formation of a non-party Government, in which the Nazis’ Party could participate, but in which they could not have the Chancellorship. Herr Hitler declared that the general election had shown that Germany wanted him as Chancellor. He also demanded the portfolios of the Interior and of Defence. Chancellor Von Papen offered him the Vice Chancellorship, but Herr Hitler refused this, and insisted on having the Chancellorship. The negotiations thus failed.
Herr Hitler had a. lengthy conversation with. President Hindenburg, who repeated his invitation to him to share in the Von Papen Government; but he rejected Herr Hitler’s demand for the Chancellorship, and regretted Hitler’s refusal to fulfil his pre-election statement; that he would support the National Government. It is understood that the President told Hitler: “I am in a position, and am ready to curb any attempt to seize power by violent means.”
It is believed the Government is considering the issue of a proclamation oi a state of emergency to frustrate any Nazi move.
