REEFTON WATER SUPPLY.
Sir, — A young man, a total stranger writes - about our town water supply in the Reefton paper, he complaining of the neglect etc., and criticises the work of oui’ past staff, iVho efficiently and economically nursed the town requirements by spending what such a scheme was worth. This stream runs over decayed logs and decayed vegetation. Take any earthenware jug of water, stand it over night, and it will show a stained vessel. He calls this pure water. One would think he was writing about a pure crystal stream flowing over granite stones. The stranger hints at the absence bf our application of ordinary intelligence. Since his short arrival to this town, we have not had to resort to pumping water from the river in dry weather. We only do that a few weeks each year. Yet he has the effrontery to give an opinion that it is a scandalous business, and most polluted conditions. Yet year after year it served its purpose with good results, and no ill effects, and not discoloured. A good plan has been recommended, and no doubt, when required, money should be spent as in the past on oiir water supply, as the occasion deserves. The trouble today, is not so much more water, but the excessive frost has damaged several parts of the main, and house pipes. Reefton is not on its own with frosts. I would suggest that the fire plugs be opened for ten minutes, and flush out the accumulated sand and gravel. I would like to know what certificates this stranger and critic holds. Yours etc.,
REEFTONITE.
