COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING,

REEFTON, July 28. The monthly meeting of the Ina igahua County Council was held today, the following'being present: Crs W. Blackadder (Chairman), J. B. Auld, J. O. Byrne, D. Panckhurst, T. Watson, J. O’Regan, W. Clayton, W. A.i*chei*« Cr Auld moved that a letter of condolence be ,sent to Mrs Thomas in the death of her husband. Mr J. O’Regan seconded this, and the motion was carried by members standing “ in silence.* , Messrs C. Coxall and J. Coglan waited on the County Council as a deputation from the Reefton Volunteer Fire Brigade, relative to an amendment of the rules governing the working of the Brigade and the elec- * tion of members from outside the town area, asking that Rosstown and Chattockville be included in the areas from which the Brigade could draw members, and that the Council approve of the alteration in the rules of the Brigade.—Decision deferred. The District Traffic Manager wrote . on the matter of reinstatement of Saturday night train from Reefton to r nangahua Junction advising that he is unable to accede to the request. The Secretary, Alexander Mines, Ltd., wrote regarding road access to the Company’s mine.—Resolved that ‘he particulars asked for be supulied. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, forwarded tracings etc., of .Douglas Road, Waitahu. —-The Council to take over piece of ground for road formation at Waitahu. The Unemployment Commissioner wrote regarding Victoria Range Track.—Left to Foreman to arrange for work to be done under unemployment scheme, and that the Council is not prepared to spend more than £2O on the work, and that the company be asked to contribute one-third of cost. X W. J. Burley wrote asking for improvements to street at his garage.— Left to foreman. Mrs Discaciati wrote regarding rates on- sections 561, 788/790.—Resolved that three years’ rates be asked for. The Mount David Sluicing Co., Ltd., applied for reduction in rent to 2/6 per acre for one year from July 1, 1932. —Application .to be recommended. Several residents of the town wrote intimating that they were prepared ’ to contribute towards the cost of com-

pleting Stevenson’s Fiat-Alexander track, and setting out the amount of

their contribution per month. —Mr J. B. Auld moved that the Council pass r, resolution of appreciation of the efforts of Mr F; W. Archer and of the townspeople in this direction. —Seconded by Mr Watson and carried. The employees of Alexander Mine forwarded a petition asking for the early completion of the Stevenson’s Fiat-Alexander track.

Considerable discusison took place on this question, and. all members spoke at length. Mr Aula moved that the foreman be instructed to -use unemployed labour as far as,possible on this work and to make arangements for transport of men from Reefton to the work and return daily, and that the men already camped on the work be given the option of six days’ work per week under the present rules governing unemployed labour.—Seconded by Mr Watson. This was carried.

F. Lawry wrote regarding river erosion at Kerr’s farm.—Foreman to attend to same.

Mr B. Huffam applied for installation of petrol pump at Blackwater.— Granted' subject to the foreman’s approval.

Greymouth Motors forwarded quotation for SOcwt. Ford truck chassis.— It was resolved that tenders be called for supply of a new truck. The , Secretary of the Cronadun biai.j c. the Women’s Institute wrote requesting Council’s support in the running of a Saturday night train to and from Cronadun.

Mr O’Regan moved and Mr Archer seconded, that the Railways Department be asked to give the train a trial and that the letter be sent to the Department.—Carried. ‘""

in company with the Public Works Engineer. It was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Unemployment Board that it undertake the prospecting of the Globe mine, with a view to development of this property, and that the Unemployment Board pay more attention to productive work in its schemes.

Mr Blackadder moved that the Inangahua County Council protest strongly against the stoppage of the Lewis Pass Road, and that Messrs H. E. Holland and Black, M.’s P., be written to regarding this, and that the Council also protest against the interference of any Board in the Public Works Department, and that the Prime Minister be written to regarding both these matters, also that Hons. M. Fagan and Mclntyre be written to. HOSPITAL BOARD.

REEFTON, July 29. The monthly meetig of the Inangflhua Hospital Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs W. B. Auld (chairman), F. Seawright, G. B. MeInroe, W. Blackadder, J. O. Byrne, T. Watson., F. W. Archer and W. Clayton. Before the Board commenced business, the Chairman referred to the death of Mrs F. Seawright, wife of one of their members. He also wished to express the sympathy of the Board with Mr Blackadder, in the death of his brother-in-law, Mr R. Thomas. He moved that the sympathy of the Board be recorded on the minutes. The motion was carried in silence, members standing. The Grey Hospital Board wrote regarding a patient from the Reefton district who was admitted to hospital —The Secretary stated that the case was one from Alexandei’ Mine, where he required X-ray treatment occasionally, anu the apparatus was not at the Reefton Hospital. The Health Department wrote regarding overdraft and authority for same. —It was carried that the Board be authorised to incur an overdraft up to £3OO. The Electric Light Company wrote stating that they could not grant a reduction in the price* of lighting. The Rodden and Byrne family wrote thanking the Board for sympathy extended to them in their bereavement in the death of Mr W. Rodden. Dr Marshall was present at the meeting, and after thanking the Board for tb» welcome extended him, congratulated the Board on having an institution that compared favourably with hospitals in other centres. He asked that his place of residence be connected with telephone to the hospital, stating that if he at any . future time changed his residence he would be responsible for any future expense. He also asked that Dr. Logan’s telephone at Waiuta be plugged in to the hospital telephone, as he had arranged co work with that medical man.—The doctor’s requests to be acceded to. ' Dr Marshall also referred to the necessity of a qualified medical man to administer anaesthetics at Reefton Hospital. Mr Seawright suggested that Dr. Logan be appointed as administrator of anaeethp*” — at the Hospital.—The Secretary stated that in the past it had cost the Board £75 per year. In reply to Mr Byrne, Dr. Marshall stated that both Drs. Conlon and Wicken had told him definitely that they would not be of any medical assistance to him at the Hospital.

It was decided that Dr. Marshall carry on with Dr. Logan until an arrangement was entered into between the Board and Dr. Logan. Dr. Marshall asked that he be allowed to meet his patients at the Reefton Hospital dispensary. This would not mean any expense to the Board. The members expressed themselves as willing to allow this L and Mi- Seawright moved and Mr Archer seconded, that the request be granted, which was carried.

, The Chairman reported that during the month they had a visit from the Diiectoi-General of Health, who was enthusiastic with the institution ami commented favourably on its economical cos;t. He considered that the only thing wanted was an X-ray plant, but he suggested that this be allowed to remain in abeyance for the present time. The Chairman also referred to .the meeting to be held regarding effecting economies, and he suggested that this be deferred until Dr. Marshall had been longer resident in Reefton.

A discussion took place on the Board’s liability regarding patients sent from that district to outside hospitals, ’and Mr Mclnroe moved that this Board would not be responsible for the special treatment of patients from that district other than to tho extent of 4/6 per day.—Seconded by Mr Archer and carried.

Mr Byrne stated that the Waiuta Medical Association paid for certain articles at the Waiuta Hospital and the Reefton Board had now taken them. —The Chairman stated that ho and the Secretary visited Waiuta and the Waiuta Medical Association had been allowed anything they wanted. Tenders , for the cottage at Waiuta, the following tenders were received: Blackwater Mines £3O, D. Thompson £35, Grace Keenan £3O. —The tender of Mr Thompson was accepted, provided' he erects a dividing fence before obtaining possession. Mr Byrne’s motion that the Blackwater Mines’ tender he accepted was not seconded. The accounts owing to the Hospital for medical attention were submitted and discussed, and it was decided to press for payment in several cases. Tho Medical Superintendent reported for the month: —Admitted 10, discharged 14, died 4, remaining 20. operations 5. anaesthetics 5, outpatients 2, attendances 32, births 1.
