HOKITIKA NOTES

[our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, July 9. The Mayor (Mr Perry) was closing the Council meeting, last evening, when Mr McGavin rose and asked a question about the appointment of an assistant to the Town Clerk, mentioning Mr Lodge. The Mayor told Mr McGavin that a reply had been posted to him. Mr McGavin, however, was not satisfied,. and proceeded to argue with the Mayor. Mr Perry said Mr McGavin was making a mountain out of a molehill. He explained that as the Town Clerk had considerable extra work thrust upon him by the Unemployment Committee, the Council had authorised him to get assistance which he did. Mr McGavin again protested, whereupon the Mayor asked him why he was taking up such a bellicose attitude, and closed the meeting, Mr McGavin saying he would call a public meeting to protest against the action of the-Town Clerk. Judging from the number of spectators present a scene was expected. A meeting of the Westland Competitions Society was held in the County Chambers yesterday afternoon, Mr D. J. Evans presiding. A statement of accounts in. connection with the recent competitions showed that a considerable loss had been incurred, the credit balance having been reduced from £lO4/17/9 to £42/4/11, a loss of £62/12/10. The biggest item in the expenditure was. judges’ fees, etc., £43/19/9.
