CROCODILE DEITY LAIR NEAR SACRED TREE Several interesting, discoveries have been made during excavations at the site of a pre -dynastic settlement at Maadi, outside Cairo. What is reguarded as the most important is a huge bone, probably of a hippopotamus, placed upright in the soil and held in position by a circle of stones. The meaning of this is not very clear, but sacrificial rites are suggested. The season’s work on the sanctuary of Sekneptynis, the crocodile god, which the Italian Archaeological Mission discovered-at Tebtynis, in the Fayum district, last year, has brought to light several new and interesting parts of the temple. One is an enclosure under the shade of a sacred tree where the sacred crocodile itself lived, and another is the actual sanctuary of the temple, i The enclosure for the crocodile is the first found in Egypt, and is exactly like those existing in Central Africa for a similar cult.
