STEALING A BRIDE

BALKANS WEDDING TRAGEDY GROOM & FRIENDS SHOT [BY CABLE—PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Recd. July 9, 9.30 a.m.) BELGRADE, July 8. The old Balkans custom of stealing a bride resulted in three being killed in the village of Novibazar. When a girl marries out of her own Village, it is customary for the father of the bridegroom to bring an escort of friends and forcibly abduct the promised bride. Generally, the rite partakes of a hilarious character, but this time the peasant father of the bride refused to let the daughter go, so when the bridegroom’s friends seized her, the bride’s brother prepared an ambush, intercepted the raiders, killing the bridegroom and two friends, and badly wounding thirteen others. The bride was then carried back in triumph.
