DEPRESSION IN U.S.A.

FARM JOURNAL’S INVITATION. The prospect of restricting, himself to a diet of eggs for an indefinite period apparently does not deter the editor of the “Breeders’ Gazette,” among the foremost stock journals in the United States, from inviting payment for subscriptions in the form of eggs. “Please send the eggs to me personally,” he writes in the May issue just to hand. “I shall have to sell ’em, hatch ’em, or eat ’em.” He offers a three years’ subscription to his paper, a monthly, in return for four dozen fresh eggs, valued at 25- cents (or roughly a shilling) a dozen. Twelve months ago the “Breeders’ Gazette” was an imposing journal, printed on excellent paper. The issue for April, 1931, had 44 pages, 14i inches by 10 inches, of which 29J pages were used for advertisements. The latest issue has 24 pages of a much reduced size (12 inches by S inches') on much poorer paper, with 10 pages of advertisements. The editor faces the position frankly. In what he calls his “round-up,” he writes* “Retreat. Business is off again, and our income is down. Such a condition, not totally unexpected, leaves no choice but to sound further retreat before the depression. This is in line with our strict policy of maintaining a balanced budget within our own journalistic household. , “Reluctantly we take off our coloured cover. To do so saves us money. We hope soon to, put it back—-when business leaders learn that not all farmers are broke and that agriculture really offers the soundest present market for their goods.”
