AVIATION
R.A.F. ANNUAL DISPLAY. [By CABLE—PRESS' ASSN.—COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, June 25. The thirteenth R.A.F. display at Hendon was witnessed by two hundred thousand, who were fascinated and spellbound by the feats of Empire airmen. Among new items that the spectators relished was a gliding dis play in which three Moths towed three motorless aeroplanes, and released them at a height of about twelve hundred feet. The gliders then came to the ground prettily, while the Moths flew to another aerodrome.
Stalnforth, reputed to be the best revolver shot in the R.A.F., besides being the speed champion, figured in a balloon bursting incident. The balloon was filled with bags of weird and monstrous shapes, which were brought down. Pilots showed uncanny skill in spectacular air fights. The destruction of a store-house and kite balloon in which six squadrons engaged brought a thrilling display to a close. CRASH AT CARTERTON. WELLINGTON, June 26. The Carterton-Wairarapa Aero Club’s plane, “Z.K.A.8.E.,” crashed in an open paddock at Carterton. The plane was piloted by lan McLaren. It went into a spin at a height of 300 feet, dashed to the ground and overturned. McLaren sustained a cut over the eye, but it is not serious. His passenger escaped unhurt. The plane was very badly smashed.
