ACCIDENTALLY SHOT. TE AROHA, April 15. Robert Pool, farmer, Springdale, single, 32, was shot in the chest by a neighbour’s son, aged 13, who discharged the gun, not knowing it was loaded. Pool’s condition is serious.

RAILWAYS BOARD. DUNEDIN, April 14.

The members of the Railways Board have completed their tour of the Otago apd Southland branch lines, and arrived at Dunedin this evening. Th£ Board expressed its deep concern that, notwithstanding the fact that economies totalling £91,110 had been effected on the branch lines alone during the financial year just closed, there remained a total loss of £557,000, including interest, of which £175,824 is a direct loss on operating in respect of the branch lines of the Dominion

FARMER FOUND SHOT. CHRISTCHURCH, April 14-

Arthur Frederick Jones, of Athelney Road, Kaikoura, a married man with four children, was found behind a haystack on his farm this morning, with a gunshot wound in the head. A discharged gun was lying alongside the body. Jones had been worried lately over financial matters, and was last seen alive by his wife at 7-30 p.m. on April 13. He was then going to' read in the kitchen, but failed to retire for the night, and a search was instituted.

TAXI DRIVER KILLED. WELLINGTON, April 15.

As the result of injuries received when he was caught under a fall of earth and rock at his home, Seatoun Road, yesterday, Olaf Hansen, taxi driver, died at the Wellington Hospital at 5.55 p.m.

Hansen was engaged in excavating a bank, when some overhanging rock gave way. A quantity came down on him, burying him up to the waist.

A neighbour, who saw the occurrence, rushed, to his aid and helped, him out. He was conveyed to the hospital, in great pain, and succumbed to his injuries, about an hour after being admitted. EX-SOLDIERS’ PENSIONS. CHRISTCHURCH, April 14. Strong criticism of the Dominion Executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, for its action in proposing an amended scale of reductions in the soldiers’ pensions to the Government, in lieu of the recommendations of the Economy Comission, and also for failing to take a direct stand against the Government’s intentions, was expressed by the members at the meeting of the Executive of the Christchurch Branch of the Association to-night. After a discussion, it was decided to disagree with the proposals of the Association headquarters, and to urge that further representations be - made to the Government and to members of Parliament, opposing all reductions in the war pensions. Wilson (Auckland). Chemistry.—T. E. Easterfield (Canterbury) and W. S. Rapson (Auckland) equal, the scholarship being awarded to W. S. Rapson. J. H. Goodey (Otago) receives an additional scholarship.
