INDIAN CRICKETERS
SIKHS AND THEIR BEARDS.
CALCUTTA, March 29.
Will Lail Singh lose his beard? The Indian cricketers to tour England have signed agreements, and one clause enforces a daily shave. Perhaps this will not operate in the case of Lail Singh, Amar Singh, and Joginder Singh, who are devout Sikhs, and also Ghulam Mahommend, a strict Moslem, who is proud of his beard. The cricketers must find their own dress suits, which some of them have never’ worn in their lives. Lail Singh (22) played against the Australians for the F.M.S. in 1927. He has made over 50 centuries during his career and in club games has three times taken all 10 wickets in an innings. Amar Singh (21) is a medium-fast right-hander. He took 16 for 28 in a match last season. Captain Joginder Singh (28) is a forcing bat and an attractive player. Ghulan Mahommed is a left-hand bowler and was considered by Gilligan as the best bowler in India in 1926. Hobbs endorsed this in 1930. He has done the “hat trick” ten times.
