KIDNAPPED BABY
LINDBERGH HOAXED & ROBBED BARGAIN NOT KEPT [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. COPYBIGHT.] NEW YORK, April 9. Colonel Lindbergh revealed to-night that cruel hoax has been perpetrated on him by the kidnappers of his son. He announced that a ransom of fifty thousand dollars was paid to them, after proper identification, upon their ] agreement to notify him of the exact whereabouts of his baby; but the child was not found at the designated point. Several days were then permitted to elapse in order to give the abductors every opportunity to keep their promise, but then all hope was abandoned that they would fulfil their agreement. The aid of the United States Treasury has been sought in order to trace the banknotes used. A circular has been sent out by the Treasury Department to the banks of the country asking the tellers to be on the lookout for specified banknotes.
The numbers of the notes became known to-day, after which Colonel Lindbergh asked the press to suppress this fact, but in many cases the numbers had already been published. Upon this fact being ascertained, Colonel Lindbergh issued a statement reiterating his promise that he will “not try to injure” the kindnappers if only they return the baby.
