FIRE OUTBREAKS

ALEXANDER ST. RESIDENCE An outbreak of fire which threatened to develop into a serious conflagration, was effectively quelled as the result of speedy work by the Greymouth Brigade last evening. The scene of the outbreak, which was . first noticed shortly after 8.30 o’clock, was a five-roomed bungalow at the upper end of Alexander Street, the residence of Mrs J. Cunliffe. The fire was first noticed by Messrs A. H. Paterson, J. Hambleton, and H. C. Rowe, who were passing along Alexandei* Street, and the alarm was given by telephone, the Brigade arriving' promptly. The fire by then had developed into a spectacular blaze, the side of the rear of the house being enveloped in flames which attracted a large crowd. Speedy work on the part of the brigade quelled the outbreak, which had threatened to destroy the whole house. The damage was mostly confined to the kitchen, the seat of the fire, and a storeroom opposite was also damaged by tire and water. The occupapts of the house were away at the time of ‘he outbreak, everything seeming secure when they left. The house is situated or the hillside, and the flames when the brigade arrived, made a spectacular display that made the fire seem more serious than it proved to be. The dwelling is the property rJ Mr. Gerald Perotti, and is insured for £7OO, in the Phoenix office. The furniture, etc., is also insured in the Phoenix office for £250.
