SOCCER FOOTBALL

OPENING OF SEASON Bad conditions marked the opening of the 1932 season on Saturday. In spite of the continual showers which made things unpleasant for and spectators alike, three matches Were played. In the Cup, a poor game at Cobden resulted in Taylorville defeating the home team by 3—o, while at Dobson, a game that was at all times interesting, resulted in the home team defeating Runanga by 4 —l. In the Junior Grade the Tech. v. Grey match was postponed, and Dobson accounted for Runanga by 3—o.

COBDEN V. TAYLORVILLE Both teams were one man short and lined up as follow: — Cobden: Timlin, Cowe, Sharp; Maughan, Cameron, McNeil; Marley, McLean, Martin, Crowe. Tayl, orville: King; Pickering, Rutherford; Tennent,' Walton, Cowan; Coates, Glen, White, Thomas. Cobden won the toss and Taylorville kicked off against the wind. Crowe with a good' run down the wing placed Cobden on attack but failure of forwards to be in position relieved the situation. Taylorville now set up a series of hot attacks, Thomas finally sending -weakly past. After a brief respite for Cobden, Taylorville were soon back. Thnlin was twice called upon and the pressure was only relieved when Glen placed a pile-driver over the bar. A corner followed to Taylorville, but Cameron cleared. Thomas receiving possession, tried a long one which completely deceived Timlin. Taylorville 1, Cobden 0. From the kick off, Cobden attacked hotly, but could not break through. Half-time sounded a few minutes later.

Taylorville attacked from the kickoff. During a melee in the Cobden goalmouth Timlin was found out of goal and Coates scored. Taylorville 2, Cobden 0.

From now on it was practically a case of how long Cobden could keep Taylorville out. They attacked continuously but found the defence very solid, Cobden finally broke away and King was called upon. A great drive by Cameron went narrowly past. Taylorville were soon at the other end and Glen scored the third goal. Taylorville 3, Cobden 0. Taylorville continued to press but the defence held with Sharp and Maughan showing out prominently. FUII time sounded without any alteration to the score.

DOBSON v. RUNANGA

The teams lined up as follow: —

Runanga: Ennor; Gore, Winstanley; Shotton, Pattinson, Clark; Hutchison, Timlin, Mdssop, Hillhouse, White. Dobson: J. White; King, A. White: Marshall, Richardson, R. White; W. White, Wilson, Short, Clasper, Coutts. Dobson attacked from the kick-off, Clasper and Coutts combining well to enable Short to head narrowly past. Keeping up the attack Richardson sent to Wilson, to White, who scored. Dobson 1, Runanga 0. From the kick-off, Runanga attacked and White saved from Mossop, to place Dobson on the attack._ Short again narrowly missed with a toucher. Ennor gained applause when he saved from Short’s feet; and Marshall on receiving, sent to Short who crossed for W. White to again score. Dobson 2, Runanga 0. Dobson maintained the attack, Ennor again relieving. Runanga broke away and R. White handled in the penalty area. Winstanley placed the resulting penalty over the bar. Wilson then put in a magnificent drive from forty yards out which Ennor could only save at the expense of a corner. Give and take play followed until half-time. From the kick-off, Dobson attacked and Short narrowly missed. Some good work followed by Coutts, resulting in Short scoring a good goal. Dobson 3 Runanga 0. From the kick-off Pattinson came through for Runanga, and scored after the goal-keeper had returned the ball to him. Dobson 3, Runanga 1. W. White forced a corner which Richardson headed narrowly past. The light Runanga team were tiring quickly and Timlin and Pattinson were called upon frequently. Just before the end Short sent to W. White who scored from close in, thus getting the ‘hat trick’. Dobson 4, Runanga 1.

N.Z.F.A. MEETING WELLINGTON, April 9Three applications for loans were made to delegates attending the annual meeting of the New Zealand Football Association. Auckland asked for £l2OO for Blandford Park, Canterbury for £lBOO for English Park, and Mosgiel for £3OO for ground improvement. The applications were dealt with in committee, receiving a very sympathetic hearing, and were ieferred to the New Zealand Council. Special attention to school football was given by the delegates. Auckland and Otago supplied information showing that the code was flourishing there both in the primary and secondary schools. Delegates from othei places, except Southland, showed that various degrees of difficulty existed in getting the game into schools. This was particularly the case in Wellington, whose delegate, Mr. Hicks, said that the time had come when there should be some method of demanding as a right that the game should be recognised. Mr. Ritchie (Auckland) stressed the necessity of getting the game into the schools. He outlined the steps taken in Auckland, and stated that there were twenty primary and twenty secondary school teams playing there.
