MANCHURIAN CONTROL
JAPANESE AND RAILWAYS.
[BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —OOPYBIGHT.]
(Received April 9, 9 a.m.) SHANGHAI, April 8.
Further strengthening the belief of the Japanese intentions to assume control of the Chinese Eastern Railway, is a report form Harbin, which announces Manchuria’s intention to rename the railway as the North Manchurian Railway. This announcement following closely upon the Japanese activities along the Chinese Eastern Railway, is believed indicative of the Japanese determination to control all railways in Manchuria, linking up the South Manchurian railway. The Soviet Government, who are joint operators of the Chinese Eastern, railway, have made no statement regarding the Japanese latest move. Meantime, severe fighting is reported in the Chientao neighbourhood, between Japanese expeditionary forces and the Chinese, resulting in heavy casualties among the latter.

The capital is to be Changchun, halfway between Mukden and Harbin. Mr Pu Yi, the former “Boy Emperor” of China, is the President-designate.
