John Priest, 60, ex-rate collector at Wandsworth, sank on his knees and moaned when sentenced to three years’ penal servitude for evading the payment of income super-tax to the extent of £15,000 during the last 17 years.
Priest’s salary was £4OO a year.
His father left him a number of properties., to which he continually added out of his savings. He had £38,000 in the bank when the proceedings commenced. He lived in a £5O-a--year house, though he admitted that his income rose in the past 10 years from £6,600 to £13,300. Full arrears have been paid since the summonses were issued.
