PICTURE THEATRES

COMPETITION RESTRICTED.

[per press association.]

WELLINGTON, April 8.

With the intention of preventing uneconomic competition, regulations under the Board of Trade Act have been gazetted, empowering the Minister of Industries and Commerce to limit the erection of new picture theatres.

The new ordnance is to be known as the Board of Trade (Cinematograph Films) Regulations, 1932, and is operative immediately. The regulations authorise the Minister to appoint officers to control and issue licenses to exhibitors in localities where the erection of additional theatres “would be likely to result in unreasonable economic waste.” The Minister has to be satisfied that the existing theatres are adequate for the normal requirements of the locality.

The Minister must also be satisfied as to whether the opening of new theatres would cause undue hardship to exhibitors already licensed.
