BOXING

GREY ASSN- MEETING. At a meeting of the Greymouth Boxing Association, held last evening, Mr A. Beban, presided, and there were present: Messrs J. McLeod, J- Guy, L. McGlashan, W- Gieseking, Herb Moore, F. Costello, F. Hi Denton, W. Kells, P. Betts and the Secretary, Mr F. W- Bailie. .

W. Hawes wrote asking that he be considered when the preliminary feather-weight arrangements were being madeIt was decided that if one of the present feather-weight fighters was unable to attend, his preliminary bout be given to Hawes. The Chairman pointed out that Hawes was a good boxer, who, in one New Zealand Championship fight, had come near to beating Purdy. The Treasurer, Mr L. D. McGlashan reported that the last amateur tournament had, according to present indications, resulted in a loss to the Association of about £4- This loss, however, was somewhat discounted by the tact that, for the amateur tournament, it had been necessary for the Association to purchase some sets of gloves, which would be a decided asset in future tournaments.

The following officials were appointed- Referee, Mr A. Beban, Time-keep-ers, Messrs Kim Williams and Herb Moore; Gong Steward, Mr C. Moss; Ring Stewards, Messrs J. McLeod and A. White; Official Seconds, Messrs JTaaffe, Gordon, and Devescovi, and* Call Stewards, Messis J. Guy and C. Neville. At the conclusion of the meeting Mr L. D. McGlashan gave notice of motion, for the next annual meeting, that the rule fixing the entrance fee for members at £l/3/- be cancelled. There was nd doubt, said Mr McGlashan, that the Association needed new members, and some allowance must be made for the present hard times. The present fee was far too high. HEENEY WINS. OAKLAND, March 16. Tom Heeney demonstrated to-night that he can hold his own with younger boxers, when he decisivelydefeated Hans Birkie, of Oakland, who is ten years his junior. It was a ten rounds fight and the New Zealander forced the fighting all the way.
