CROQUET

INTER-CLUB TOURNAMENT. The inter-club tournament for the Silver Buttons presented by the Dominion Croquet Council was continued yesterday afternoon at the Makura Club’s lawn; before a good attendance. and under splendid weather conditions. The finals of the A. Division and B. Division competitions were played off and resulted in even and interesting games. At the conclusion of the day’s play Mrs D. Tennent, Vice-President, of the Makura Club, expressed the hope that the visiting players had found their stay enjoyable, and. referred to the high standard of play shown in the various games. The Silver Buttons were presented to the three winning competitors (Mesdames Warnes, Nottle and Gillespie) by Mrs A. Smith. Secretary of the newly-formed West Coast Croquet Association. The finals resulted as follow: — A Division: Mrs Nottle (Westport) beat Mrs Whibley (Greymouth) 2G/19, 26/21. B. Division: Mrs Gillespie (Westport) beat Mrs Coburn (Greymouth) 26/8, 26/4. During the afternoon, several friendly inter-club matches were played, resulting as follows: —Mrs Tennent and Mrs Hannan (Greymouth) beat Mrs Gilbert and Mrs Gothard (Westport) 26/19. Mrs Gilbert (Westport) beat Mrs Mercer (Greymouth) 26/19. Mrs Davies and Mrs Robertson (Greymouth) beat Mrs Stallard and Mrs L. Wicken (Reefton) 26/23. COAST ASSOCIATION FORMED. At a meeting of delegates from the various club represented at the tournament, it was decided to form a West Coast Croquet Association. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Aitken (Westport); Vice-Presidents: Mesdames Wilson (Runanga), Stallard (Reefton), and Saywell (Hokitika); Secretary and Treasurer, Mrs A. Smith (Greymouth); official handicapper, Mrs Gilbert (Westport); official referee, Mrs D. Tennent (Greymouth). It was decided that a West Coast Tournament should be held at Greymouth in February of next year, to compete for a challenge trophy donated to the Association by the Dominion Council.
