FIFTH TEST FIASCO

VISITORS AGAIN ROUTED.

[BY CABLE —PBESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.]

MELBOURNE, February 15.

Showers on Sunday made the turf very damp for the resumption of the last test, South Africa versus Australia, to-day. The captains disag/eed regarding the time for resumption. The umpires, after two inspections, decided that play should commence at 2.15 o’clock.

The wicket was easy at the start, but only three runs were scored in twenty-five minutes. Nash bowled four maidens in succession. The remainder of the visitors’ innings was a procession. Three wickets fell at thirty, the batsmen having not the slightest idea of how to play on the soft wickets, which became bad as the innings proceeded. Quinn was missed twice in the outfield by Kippax and Bradman, in hitting wildly off O’Reilly and Ironmonger respectively. Ironmonger kept an accurate length, and turned the ball considerably, while O’Reilly ’ was patchy in the matter of his length, but inexperienced batting on the bad wicket was mainly responsible for the. debacle. The game ended at 3.45 p.m., Australia winning by an innings and seventy-two runs. Scores: —
