ST. COLUMBA BEAT ST MARY’S
Members of the St. Columba Club tennis team, yesterday journeyed to Hokitika, and played an inter-club match with St. Mary’s Club, on the St. Mary’s Club courts. Splendid weather prevailed, and some interesting games were played. St. Columba Club, by a series of victories in the men’s singles, and in the combined doubles, won the match, the scores, at,the conclusion of the day’s play, being: St. Columba 12 sets and 94 games, and St. Mary’s 6 sets and 64 games. Detailed results (St. Columba players being mentioned first) were: Combined Doubles: Mrs Dargan and C. Durning won from Miss L. Dale and Fr. McKay 6/5; Miss M. Ryall and T. Anisy won from Miss M. Sumner and T. Lock 6/4; Miss B. MeSherry and S. Anisy lost to Miss E. Dale and J. Stopforth 5/6; Miss M. Quinn and J. Devonpoit won from Miss M. Connolly and L. Groufsky 6/2; Miss E. Sequin aud N. Bayley won from Miss I. Tulloch and N. Nutting 6/1; Miss M. Beban and B. Caulton lost to Miss D. Stopforth and J. Stuart 3/6. Ladies’ Singles:—Mrs Dargan won from Miss L. Dale 2/6; Miss Ryall lost to Miss Sumner 2/6; Miss McSherry lost to Miss E. Dale- 3/6. Men’s Singles:—C. Durning won from Fr. McKay 6/2; T. Anisy lost to T. Lock 5/6; S. Anisy won from J. Stopforth 6/1; J. Devonport won from L. Groufsky 6/2; N. Bayley won from N. Nutting 6/1; B. Caulton won from J. Stuart 6/0. Ladies’ Doubles: —Mrs Dargan and Miss Ryall won from Misses L. Dale and M. Women's Doubles: Mrs Molesworth and Miss Hall beat Misses Valkenburg and Hartigan 7/5, 9/7. Men’s Doubles: France brothers, beat Wilson and Court 8/6, 6/3. ’ Mixed Doubles: A. L. France and Mrs Dykes beat Court and Miss Hall 8/6, 8/10, 6/1; D. G. France and Mrs Melody beat Wilson and Miss Valkenburg 3/6, 6/4, 7/5; Court and Mrs Molesworth, and D. G. France and Mrs Sturman 6/4, 1/6 (set all); Wilson and Miss Hartigan and A. L. France and Miss Nicholls 7/5, 5/7 (set all). AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS ADELAIDE, February 13. At the Australian tennis championships, the finals resulted: — Men’s singles:—Crawford (N.S.W.) retained the title, after a gruelling battle -with Hopman (Victoria) winning 4/6, 6/3, 3/6, 6/3, 6/1. Junior singles:—McGrath (N.S.W.) beat Quist (South Australia) 6/4, 6/2. Women’s singles.—Mrs Butterworth (N.S.W.) beat Miss Le Mesurier (South Australia) 9/7, 6/4. In the finals of the mixed doubles Crawford and Mrs Crawford beat Satoh and Mrs O’Hara-Wood 6/3, 8/6, 6/3. In the women’s doubles Mesdames Crawford and Buttsworth (N.S.W.) beat Misses Le Mesurier and Weston 1 (South Australia) 6/2, 6/2. ’ Men’s doubles. —Crawford and Moon ; beat Paterson and Plopman 4/6, 6/4, 12/10, 6/3.
